Day Trips Itineraries from Truro, Nova Scotia
With the warmer days ahead these day trip itineraries will having you loving summer! These outings will take you not only around Truro, but will help you explore Colchester County, while being perfect for the whole family and are great for all ages!
Here are some of our favourite day trip itineraries:
Off to Tatamagouche!
Take the highway 311 and stop at Cafe 311 to get your caffeine fix and a snack for the road! Make sure to check out The Earltown General Store for lots of locally made goodies.
Once you get to Tatamagouche, visit the Creamery Square. There's a farmer's market on Saturdays (9am-1pm) as well as a heritage and arts center.
There's lots of options for lunch, including Big Al's, The Nook & Cranny and The Chowder House. Before you leave downtown Tatamagouche, stop by the Railway Station which features a cafe, restaurant and gift shop - all in vintage traincars & cabooses!
Want more? Check out Nelson Memorial Park, a quiet picnic park next to the bay with a gorgeous garden in the warmer months. There's also a beach nearby. Blue Sea Beach Provincial Park is located in Malagash, roughly a 25 minute drive from Tatamagouche.

2. Explore Stewiacke, the halfway point between the Equator and the North Pole!
Take Nova Scotia Trunk 2 through Brookfield and stop at Hurricane Heidi's & Brookfield Bakery for a road snack! Continue on Trunk 2 and make a stop at The Shubenacadie Provincial Wildlife Park to see lots of wildlife. This is a must see for animal lovers!
Once you reach Stewiacke, Mastodon Ridge is a great place to check out. There's a park, mini golf, ice cream and a shop.
There are a couple of lunch options around, but we recommend a packed lunch on one of their many picnic tables at Mastodon Ridge.
If you enjoy locally made cocktails and spirits, check out Coldstream Distillery before you leave Stewiacke.
Visit the Stewiacke River Park, it features easy trails, beautiful forests and a playground.
Take a drive through scenic Shubenacadie to the Caddell rapids Lookoff. Visitors can oftentimes see many bald eagles, as well as the Shubenacadie River tides coming in!

3. Drive to Five Island!
Take Nova Scotia Trunk 4 towards Masstown and make a stop at MacElmon's Pond. There's a picnic park and a short walking trail, as well as a giant pond and beautiful view!
Stop off at The Masstown Market to shop everything local, including the most important - road snacks. Head out towards Great Village and make a stop at The Dutchman's Cheese Farm. This is a family owned farm with a petting zoo and retail shop. Plus the best cheese around!
You'll find Lowland Gardens just up the road, open seasonally. This is a gorgeous greenhouse center. There are a few antique shops to check out when you're going through Great Village.
Hungry? There are a few options once you get to Five Islands. We love Diane's!
Check out Five Islands Provincial Park, it features trails and a small beach access. Drive a little further and you'll find the Five Islands Lighthouse! This is a great place to stop and take in all of Five Island's natural beauty.
